The Bonnevaux (Dauphiné) (Bonna Vallis) monastery , not to be confused with Bonnevaux (Vienne) monastery , is a former Cistercian abbey in France . It was located in the municipality of Lieudieu near Villeneuve-de-Marc in the Isère department , Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , 25 kilometers east of the city of Vienne and around six kilometers southeast of Saint-Jean-de-Bournay on the northern edge of the Forêt de Bonnevaux.

history

The monastery was founded in 1117 by the Archbishop of Vienne Guy (Guido) de Bourgogne (later Pope Calixt II ) as the sixth daughter monastery of the Cîteaux monastery; sometimes its founding is also attributed to Géraud de Salles . It was Mother Monastery of Mazan Abbey , Abbey Montpeyroux , Tamié Abbey , Abbey Léoncel , Monastery Valmagne , Monastery Ulmet , Monastery Valbenoite and monastery Valcroissant . The nunneries of Laval-Bénite Monastery and Bonnecombe Monastery were also under the jurisdiction of Bonnevaux. The monastery achieved prosperity through various privileges and foundations, including the Dauphin . It owned fifteen grangia in Villeneuve-de-Marc, St-Georges-d'Espéranche, Beaurepaire, Primarette, Ste-Anne-sur-Gervonde and Diémoz. The monastery suffered in the wars of religion in the 16th century. In 1576 it was sacked by the Huguenots and the church was devastated. During the French Revolution it was disbanded, looted again, set alight and then used as a quarry. Today nothing stands upright. The foundation stones were used to build the church of Villeneuve-de-Marc in 1938 .

Buildings and plant

A painting from 1750 shows a complex with a church in the north with a large west tower, the enclosure south of it. On the site of the abbey, a memorial (cross with plaque) was built in 1933 by the Tamié monastery . A three-aisled grangie is preserved.
