The Kontorhaus am Jödebrunnen is a small building that the owner of a timber shop based there had built as an office building directly on the historic Jödebrunnen in Braunschweig in 1899 . Since 2013, after many decades of being out of the shadows, the building and fountain have been integrated into the infrastructure of the ring track at Braunschweig Westbahnhof .

history

The office building is a small house with a veranda from 1899. It was built according to the plans of the architect and master mason F. Schönemann and was commissioned by Fr. Brachvogel, the former owner of the industrial property adjacent to the Jödebrunnen. The Brachvogel company existed since 1866 and was initially located in Beckenwerkerstraße . After the Ringbahn was built, it moved to the Westbahnhof in 1886. The rail connection was of great importance for Brachvogel because the company dealt with the "import of Nordic, Galician, Russian and American woods" and maintained a warehouse in Wismar for this. The company existed until about 1933 and was then continued as a timber business.

The office building was originally designed in the Asian style, on the roof ridge was a kite and the year 1899. The roof drainage was provided with kite-like gargoyles. The wooden parts on the veranda and the rafters are artfully designed, the partially colored glazed windows are pointed arches. The interior consisted of a single room furnished as a cozy office with a fireplace. The chimney slogan is: “Fight, strive, but live. Create, wrestle, but sing ”. According to the tradition of the descendants of the first owner, he used the building regularly for work.

Current condition

Condition of the building in 2016

Today there is nothing left of the roof decorations and the veranda is covered to protect against vandalism. The building was rented until 2011 and is accordingly usable. The city of Braunschweig acquired the property at the end of 2011 and commissioned an architectural office with experience in the renovation of historic buildings to assess the existing building and estimate possible renovation costs. The report was presented on site on May 4, 2013 as part of a publicly announced ideas workshop. The ideas of around 30 people who took part in this workshop will be evaluated by the Department for Monument Preservation and the Department for Urban Renewal. The office building is located in the redevelopment area Westliches Ringgebiet , in which the urban development subsidy and the European Fund for Regional Development support financially measures for the development and upgrading of the residential area, which also includes the connection of the area to the other green areas of the quarter and the ring track .

In the context of the workshop, a working group focused on the future use of the building, whose members founded the “Kontorhaus am Jödebrunnen” association in October 2015. This association has set itself the goal of taking over the sponsorship for the house.

On May 30, 2018, the planning and environmental committee also approved a resolution proposed by the Braunschweig city administration for the renovation of the building and the supply-related development, following positive deliberations in the renovation advisory board and the city district council. The estimated costs were given as 258,000 euros. Work on the renovation of the building began in July 2020.
