As a selector (the original, now considered misleading applicable term " concentrate selector " goes to Reinhold Hofmann back) is called in wildlife biology in addition to the Raufutterfressern and mixed types one Hauptäsungstyp of ruminant ungulates . Around 40% of all ruminants are among the selectors.

The food of selectors is poor in plant fibers and cellulose , but rich in easily digestible nutrients such as sugar , starch and proteins . Game finds this food mainly in leaves , flowers , herbs , shoots , buds , acorns and fruits .

The rumen of selectors are smaller than those of comparable species with other types of grazing, as they eat less coarse grazing parts for ruminating, which is also more frequent but shorter. Fermentation also takes place more quickly in the stomach . The speed of digestion does not allow difficult to digest food with a high cellulose content, so easily digestible plant components are consumed in a very targeted manner. Due to the strong selection from the food available, selectors eat food more frequently than comparable species, with eight to twelve grazing periods daily being common.

Selectors are increasingly causing game damage in forestry and agriculture, as their specific food spectrum preferably includes young tree shoots and fresh crops. Flower plantings in parks and gardens are also often perceived by selectors as a food supply if they are easily accessible to game without danger.

Examples of selectors are European species such as roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus ) and elk ( Alces alces ), and also non-European small kudu ( Tragelaphus imberbis ), giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis ) and white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ).
