Predecessor mines and mergers

The Pokój coal mine (in Polish Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Pokój ; German Peace Pit ) is an active company of the Polska Grupa Górnicza in the Nowy Bytom district of Ruda Śląska , Poland. Working independently until June 2016, he was integrated into the newly established Ruda coal mine on July 1, 2016 .

Although the website of the current mine operator states that it operates the oldest operating colliery in Upper Silesia with the Brandenburg mine and thus also with Pokój , the illustration on the right shows a more differentiated picture.

Here only the heavily bordered strand is shown, the left one can be found under the keyword Wanda-Lech , the two on the right under Walenty-Wawel and Paulus / Paweł .

history

The originally 2.23 km² coal mine, which initially belonged to the stock corporation "Minerva" (founded by Count Andreas Renard) and from 1871 to "Oberbedarfs-AG" (majority shareholder Karl Wolfgang von Ballestrem), was located in Ruda Nowy Bytom (old name Black Forest ) and initially consisted of the "Friedrich Wilhelm" field, in which the first shaft was sunk in 1899.

In 1902 the fields "Sara I" and "Eintracht I" were added and the mine was named Friedensgrube . In 1906 the mining field was enlarged by leasing several fields from neighboring collieries.

While mining initially took place very close to the surface on the 70 m and 185 m levels, after the two shafts "Maria" and "Anna" were sunk with depths of 420 m, the Clara Oberbank (2 m) Heintzmann (3.3 m) and Gerhard (6.6 m), who supplied charcoal that could be easily coked up, for the Peace Hut / Huta Pokój. Around 1910, the Barbaraschacht with a depth of 282 m was added for ventilation and rope travel.

From 1931 it was part of the Rudzkie Gwarectwo Węglowe (coal union Ruda), a successor organization of Oberbedarf and the Ballestremschen possessions (75% share of the Ballestrem family ).

Until 1922 and from 1939 to 1945 the mine was called the Peace Pit , and in the interim and later the name Pokój . While the shafts "Maria" and "Anna" have long been filled and the daytime facilities demolished, the mine continues to operate under the name Pokój to this day.

CHP Pokój

The first renaming of the peace pit in Pokój took place in 1922, but the mine again carried its old name during the occupation in World War II.

On April 1, 1968, Pokój took up the Lech-Wanda mine , but kept its previous name. On July 1, 1995, the Wawel mine (new) was merged with the Peace Pit, the facilities there were shut down and largely demolished, and only the mining field was added to the Pokój mine .

Current situation

Pokój carried out its mining activities under the heavily populated area of Ruda until 2015 and mined coal on three levels in 320 m, 600 m and 790 m depths, its current mining area covers only 3.1 km². This led to a very intensive mining of 5,000 tonnes of coal per day and km² and thus inevitably caused damage to the mountains despite the backfill.

Today the mine only has the 100 m high concrete headframe above the "Wanda" shaft, the two shafts "Lech I and II" and the "Otylia" weather shaft (not belonging to the old mine of the same name, but located in the "Antonie" field of the peace pit) in operation.

In 2014 the mine had 1931 employees and made a loss of 138 zł per ton of coal mined. Due to these high losses, the three mines Pokój , Bielszowice and Halemba were merged under the name Ruda in 2016 by the PGG . The aim of this merger is to cease production on Pokój from January 1, 2017 and to unearth and process the coal on Bielszowice .

In the meantime, the following shafts, all of which have since been torn down, have also been included: "Jan Karol" (on the Wanda site), "Maria" and "Anna" (belonging to the Peace Pit) and "Czarny Las".
