Musikforeningen (Musikverein) in Copenhagen is considered Denmark's most important innovation in the concert world of the 19th century. It was a private organization that was active from 1838 to 1931.
Especially under the chairmanship and direction of Niels Gade (1850–90) the association developed into the meeting place for musical life in the city; he had his own symphony orchestra and choir. Carl Nielsen was its director from 1915 to 1927. Other leaders included Franz glasses , Emil Hartmann and Franz Neruda .

Musikforeningen was founded in 1836. One of his main goals was to publish works by Danish composers whose non-publication would have been a loss to the arts. The association also awarded music prizes and organized concerts. The latter became the most important function of the association soon after the association was founded; it became the leading concert institution in Copenhagen.
For 40 years - until his death in 1890 - Gade was a skillful and successful club chairman. He was succeeded by Emil Hartmann (1836–1898; son of JPE Hartmann ). In 1892 Franz Neruda (1843–1915) took over the post and conducted concerts until he died in 1915.
In the early 1920s, public interest declined sharply. That was probably due to the difficult economic times and the fact that the club was increasingly old-fashioned or outdated. Nielsen gave up the management in 1927. His successor Ebbe Hamerik could not keep the club despite his experience; it was dissolved in 1931.
