history

The square was laid out according to plan around 1900, shortly after the southern main collector of the sewer system was built. The buildings that still characterize the square on the west side today consist of five-story tenement houses, all of which were built between 1902 and 1908. The background for the construction boom at that time was the strong expansion of the nearby Schuckert - & - Co. - Works that were taken over by Siemens & Halske in 1903 . Housing was urgently needed for their employees.

Many streets and squares in the district, as well as Copernicus Square, are named after historical scientists.

During the Second World War , most of the surrounding buildings were destroyed during the air raids on Nuremberg in 1944/45. On March 17, 1945, only five of the historic buildings were still standing and these were also badly damaged. They were repaired again and today the properties at Kopernikusplatz 6 to 16 are under monument protection . Most of the rest of the building fabric around the square dates from the 1960s.

today

Around the busy square there are a number of restaurants and cafés, shops, banks and various service companies, a broad basis for a busy everyday life. With several bus and tram lines as well as an underground station at the north end, the square is well connected in terms of local transport. There is a small bar in the basement of the underground station (Aufseßplatz). In the branching Brosamer street is with the cinema Casablanca.

The square is partly pedestrian, partly traffic-calmed and free of through traffic. Many people from different cultures meet there on warmer evenings.
