Head (unit)

Head was a Swiss measure of liquid and was primarily used in the cantons of Glarus and Zurich . Drinks, like wine , were measured here. In Aachen it was a grain measure .

In general, a head was divided into 2 measures or 8 bottles, also called stumps. The reference to 1 quarter (fourth part of the bucket) was dependent on the type of liquid and it applied to that

  • true measure 1 quarter = 7 ½ head and for that
  • cloudy measure 1 quarter = measure 8 head.
  • 1 measure corresponded to 182.49 centiliters, which gave a bucket (louder) of 10,948.4 centiliters or cloudy 11,679.4 centiliters.

Aachen

In Aachen it was a grain size and

  • 1 Malter = 6 barrels or 24 heads
  • 1 barrel = 2470.8 centiliters = 1245.6 Parisian cubic inches

As a grain measure, head was also named with sack or coupe .

Kingdom of Netherlands

Here the liter was called Kop , which means head.
