Head of a kouro (NAMA 16)
The head of a kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens ( NAMA ) with inventory number 16 is the remainder of an archaic statue of a young man dating from the middle of the 6th century BC. Is dated.
The head is no longer well preserved in many places. The chin and nose are broken and partly missing. The hair is held together with a ribbon. It is designed in curly waves and widening downwards behind the shoulders and along the back. A single wave of curls is drawn onto the chest on each side. On the top and the back of the head, the hair is not worked out. Two thin strands hang over the temples in front of the ears . The facial expression is reserved, the face long and narrow. The large eyes stand out despite the poor condition, while the lips are narrow.
The head was found in 1885 in the sanctuary of Apollo on Mount Ptoion in Boeotia . The marble head is 21 centimeters high and is made around the year 540 BC. Dated.
