Koppel 66 , the house for arts and crafts is located in the district of St. Georg in the district of Hamburg-Mitte . The name of the building is also the address, a second entrance is located a little back on the Lange Reihe street. The building houses workshops and studios, exhibition areas, the GEDOK art forum and the Koppel café.

The Union

The foundation of the association Förderkreis Koppel 66 eV goes back to the private initiative of the Hamburg restorer Hans Dieter Rommeney. The new foundation was in 1990. The Koppel 66 was to become a publicly subsidized social and cultural-political institution. The aim of the association was above all to promote the next generation and communication among the artisans , to create inexpensive spaces for a permanent presentation of their work and to enable the interested public easy access to artistic workshops. Each tenant and sub-tenant automatically becomes a member and is obliged to volunteer for all tasks and concerns that are part of the functioning of the artist community. This includes the selection of tenants as well as the support of sponsors, administration, organization of exhibitions and trade fairs, repairs to the building and communication with the responsible authorities - to name just a few.

The building

The building was built in 1924 as a machine factory. It has two entrances - at Koppel 66 and at Lange Reihe 75. Originally it served as a turning shop for mechanical engineering, later as a factory and after the war as a warehouse for the 1000 pots company. The focal point is the staircase over two floors and above the glass atrium . The studios and workshops are located around the staircase . The opening was in February 1981. The building is registered as a commercial building in the list of monuments for Hamburg-Mitte under the number 13734; Carl Plötz is responsible for the design.
