The Korea Institute for Advanced Study (한국 고등 과학원 KIAS 韓國 高等 科學院) is a research institute for mathematics , physics and quantitative science in Seoul .

history

The KIAS was founded in December 1995. In August 1996, Efim Zelmanov was named a "Distinguished Professor" for mathematics. The opening of the KIAS took place in October 1996, in November 1996 the institutes for mathematics and physics started their work. In August 1999, Leonard Susskind was appointed "Distinguished Professor" for physics. In September 2000 the Institute for Quantitative Natural Sciences (“Computational Sciences”) started its work. The “KIAS Scholar Program” has existed since 2006. In 2010 the "Center for Advanced Computation", in 2013 the "Center for Mathematical Challenges" and in 2014 the "Quantum Universe Center" opened. Since 2015, Ashoke Sen "Distinguished Professor" of Physics and since 2016 John M. Kosterlitz "Distinguished Professor" for Computational Sciences.

In addition to the aforementioned Jeong Han Kim and Hwang Jun-muk, the scientists at the institute . Guest scholars included June Huh , Masaki Kashiwara , Michael Kapovich , Minhyong Kim and Hee Oh .

Working method

Currently (2017) the institute has three “Distinguished Professors”, 25 permanent professors, 31 “KIAS Scholars”, 4 “Research Professors” and 92 “Research Fellows”. KIAS Scholars are visiting scholars who spend several months a year at the institute for a period of 3 years. Research Fellows are employed at the institute for a period of 2 to 4 years.

The subjects worked on at the institute include algebraic geometry and differential geometry , astrophysics , particle physics and string theory , statistical physics , bioinformatics and quantum information .

Affiliated to the institute are the Open KIAS Center , the Center for Advanced Computation , the Center for Mathematical Challenges , the KIAS Transdisciplinary Research Program , the Quantum Universe Center and the Korea Dark Energy Search .

The institute is financed by the state and is formally affiliated with KAIST .
