The Korea Kulturhaus Wien is a culture and communication center in the 22nd district of  Vienna, Donaustadt . The establishment of this cultural center took place at the suggestion of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon . The building is a listed building .

history

Seerestaurant, behind it the VIC under construction (1974)

The building was erected on the occasion of the 1964 international garden show ( WIG 64 ) in the Donaupark , on the banks of the artificially created Irissee, based on a design by the architect Kurt Schlauss . It is one of the rare examples of leisure architecture in post-war Viennese modernism.

After the garden show, the building continued to be used as a restaurant. It was later used at the baracuda dancing club and also as a gym. Before the renovation, it stood empty for several years and fell into disrepair. This phase was only interrupted in summer 2006 by numerous music events. A conversion to an office building planned in 2008 was not implemented.

The building shortly before the adaptation to the Korea Culture House (2011)

In 2010, the Association for the Promotion of a Korean Culture House in Vienna discovered the building, which was already threatened with demolition. The architect H-Sang Seung took on the planning of the redesign for the new purpose. The renovation was carried out under strict conditions of the Federal Monuments Office . A particular challenge in the redesign resulted from the necessary thermal renovation, as the original use was only planned for the summer months. The financing of the approx. 1.5 million euros for the adaptation comes from culture pots of the Republic of Korea and from donations.

Shortly after the reopening (2013)

The two-storey building is designed as a horizontal cuboid with pillars. The 24-meter-long lake facade with large windows is particularly distinctive. On the upper floor, the window elements can be lifted up using counterweights. In the lower ship's restaurant , the windows can be moved laterally using joints and guide rails. The bottom of the lower storey is lower than the water level of the lake. This gives the impression of a ship lying at anchor.

Current usage

Korea House of Culture (2016)

On May 3, 2012, the extensively renovated building was opened with a party in the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Hyun Cho, the Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer and the Vienna City Councilor Ulli Sima .

The cultural center offers visitors everything from a tea house to a library to courses in calligraphy. German courses for Koreans and Korean courses for Austrians are also offered. In addition, there are exhibitions, lectures, readings, cultural evenings, concerts, seminars and forums on current topics.
