The Korission-See ( Greek λίμνη Κορισσίων "See von Korissia ", English Lake Korission ), also known as Korission lagoon , is a lagoon in the southwest of the island of Corfu . It is a national nature reserve that is protected both because of its aesthetic value and because of its biological and economic importance. As the largest wetland on the island, it is of particular importance for the preservation of the bird fauna.

history

The lagoon was created under the rule of the Venetians in Corfu. They had a canal dug to drain the then increasingly swampy area. The formation of the lagoon should also enable fish farming.

geography

The lagoon is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land and lies below the places Vraganiotika and Linia, which are built on a chain of hills east of Lake Korission. Korission Lake is about 5 km long. The beaches of Halikounas and Issos are within walking distance of the lagoon lake.

Flora and fauna

In the nature reserve around Lake Korission, which covers a total of around 6000 hectares, there is a dune landscape, some of which are higher than 15 meters, and a cedar forest with the corresponding settlement. There are also reed areas, tamarisks, white lilies and 14 different orchid species as noteworthy plants in the nature reserve. The area is a magnet for various species of butterflies and birds, such as cormorants , great egrets , flamingos , wigeons and other species of ducks. In addition, there are also Greek tortoises , European pond turtles , brook turtles , zebra fish and Valencia tortoises .
