The G. Melde grain distillery was at times one of the largest private companies in Germany. In 1992 the Cottbuser Kornbrennerei und Likörfabrik GmbH (previously Konsum Kornbrand Melde Cottbus) was taken over by the HCAsmussen company from Bargteheide. Underberg held the naming rights of the "Melde" brand, as it had acquired the Kniepf-Melde company, which was newly founded in Orsoy after World War II, along with the naming rights. Konsum Kornbrand Melde Cottbus only used the name "Melde" in the GDR. According to Underberg's demand, the Cottbuser Kornbrennerei und Likörfabrik GmbH was only allowed to sell products under the name "Melde" until October 31, 1991.

Company history

The G. Melde grain distillery was founded in 1748 by the cloth maker Mattheus Melde. Over the next 127 years, the family business became the largest distillery in the region. In 1875 the company was sold and the new owner expanded the product range to include grain , liqueur and yeast . In 1907 the word mark Melde was protected. By 1914 the G. Melde grain distillery had developed into one of the largest private companies in Germany. By the Second World War, the business areas were expanded to include wine trading , fruit juice press and fruit wine press.

After the expropriation in the GDR , the company was continued as the Konsum Kornbrand- and Liqueur Factory Melde . In 1992 the company was bought by Underberg , who continued to operate the distillery under the name Cottbuser Kornbrennerei und Likörfabrik GmbH . The location was then closed in 1996.
