from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former Vogelsang grain distillery is a protected monument in Hattingen , OT Niederwenigern , Hombergsegge 54.

history

The distillery was founded in 1815 and was registered as a business in 1832. The family owned the right to distill 120,000 liters a year. The boiler house of the distillery was heated with coal that was extracted from a shaft on the company premises. One and a half tons of hard coal was mined every day. There was an observation tower on the site. After a complaint with the customs authorities in 1931 and audits of the accounts of the raw materials, hidden underground facilities were discovered in which schnapps worth at least one million Reichsmarks was distilled black . The public prosecutor's office proved that schnapps worth half a million marks had flowed into the Saar area . When they were arrested, the Vogelsang brothers tore open three fermentation vats; 22 tons of mash flowed through the place. The company closed for the time being in 1933. During the Second World War, the buildings were used as accommodation for 20 French and 46 Polish slave laborers. After the end of the war until 1970, schnapps production continued. In September 1994 the former boiler house collapsed. The neighboring Hombergsegge 50 and Villa Vogelsang in Essen-Horst are among the family's former houses .
