The Kornhaus is one of the remaining large half-timbered houses in the old town of Schwäbisch Gmünd , along with the Grät and the office building of the hospital .

history

The half-timbered house is dated to 1507 and was built in one construction process. A mention of the granary in 1500 could indicate a previous building. The functional building Kornhaus served as a grain and food store and was supposed to secure the legally regulated supplies of the imperial city , both for times of peace and times of war . In 1869 the city scales were set up in the Kornhaus, and in 1871 the city's calibration office followed. After apartments were set up in the Kornhaus in 1919, the building was carefully restored in 1925.

In 1973 and 1974, however, extensive restoration took place in which the half-timbered house was converted into an office building for the city administration. Today, in addition to the city administration, private offices and the local Gmünder Kunstverein are located in the Kornhaus.
