history

The Heilig-Geist-Spital stood on the Kornmarkt from the 13th century. The outlines of the former hospital chapel are marked by the paving on the square. In 1557 the hospital buildings were demolished on the initiative of the city council in order to set up a milk and herb market there. Initially the name Neuer Markt was used, later the name Kornmarkt caught on.

During construction work for an underground car park in 1986, the remains of the hospital wall and the remains of the hospital cemetery used from the end of the 13th century to the first third of the 15th century were found under the square. The latter recorded around 270 burials from around 800 grave sites, including "Gravege 45" from the 14th century, a subsequent burial of two approximately thirty-year-olds common for spouses, which the cis- and hetero-normative excavation team categorized as probably consanguineous women without further investigation were. It could not be determined whether the two persons were in fact Sapphic or one of them was trans, which would make the form of burial easier to explain.

Buildings

To the north of the Kornmarkt is the town hall , on the southeast corner the Graimberg Palace and on the west side the Prinz Carl municipal administration building , whose predecessor was a luxury hotel. In the center of the square is the Marian column with three fountain bowls, the so-called Kornmarkt Madonna, created by Peter van den Branden in 1718 .
