Granary The oak

The oak on the Untertrave

The granary "Die Eiche" is a listed storage building in Lübeck's old town .

The property at Untertrave 34 was first mentioned in 1323 as having a grain house . At that time, a corridor still belonged to the property , which was built on with smaller stalls and was called Harder Gang . In 1873 the Lübeck merchant and later Senator Henry Mann built the seven-storey warehouse building that still exists today at Lübeck's Hansahafen , with the corridor and stalls being built over on this occasion. As part of the Mann family fortune, The Oak also plays a small role in the work of his son Thomas Mann . In Buddenbrooks he is mentioned by name alongside the other Mann firm's stores. The tower-like granary was designed as a granary. The facade was built in brick in the form of historicism . The small stepped gable is a neo-Gothic concession to the architectural style that was still predominant in Lübeck at that time. The oak was placed under a preservation order in 1973 and after it was abandoned as a storage facility, it was used by a sailmaker and rigging shop for many years. Then it was renovated in the 1990s, converted into a furniture store and then served as an auction house as an exhibition and sales room. The listed building has been converted into a columbarium since 2019 and is to be opened as an urn house from winter 2020.

Six more port warehouses from the Mann company were located at Lübeck harbor An der Untertrave: Number 16 ( The Whale ), Number 24 ( The Eagle ), Number 33 ( The Linden Tree ), Number 71 ( The Elephant ), Number 87 ( The Lion ) and Number 91 ( The Deer ). Only the oak has been preserved approximately in its original state. The appearance of the whale and the eagle was greatly changed, the elephant was destroyed in the Second World War. The linden , the lion and the deer were broken off.
