The large lunar crater Korolev is roughly in the middle of the back of the moon .
- Selenographic coordinates of the crater center 5 ° south, 157 ° west
- About 420 km in diameter
- named after the Russian chief rocket designer Sergei Koroljow (1907–1966).
The large crater has the shape of a huge double ring, the inner ring being almost 200 km in diameter, and has a circular negative gravity anomaly (negative Mascon ), which changes all around to strongly positive. Inside the formation there are several smaller craters, including two over 50 km in diameter.
Exactly the same shape of the double ring can also be found in the giant craters Apollo and Hertzsprung to the south and east . Likewise, the three large structures on the back of the moon have similarities in the gravitational image (weaker also to the Mare Orientale ), which indicates related origins.
