The Cossack Island ( Ukrainian Козацький острів / Russian Казачий остров ) is a river island of the Dnieper in the south of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . Many animal and plant species listed on the Ukraine Red List live on the island.
The island on the right bank of the river is a nature reserve and administratively belongs to the Kiev town of Holosiyiv . The length of the island is about 2.8 km and the width is about 780 m. It has an area of 154 hectares.
The Cossack island lies on the old river bed of the Dnieper and has many bays that form a valuable breeding ground for 29 species of fish, many of which are threatened with extinction.
During the German-Soviet War , the Red Army troops crossed the Dnieper here to recapture Kiev.
