Manufacturing

Altia production facility

Koskenkorva Viina contains 38% vol. Alcohol and cereal fired . Originally potatoes were used, today barley is used as a raw material. The mash is first distilled to ninety-six percent alcohol in a continuous process with over 200 steps and then diluted with water to the desired alcohol content and mixed with 3 grams of sugar per liter. Although often referred to as such, Koskenkorva is not strictly speaking vodka because the distillate is not filtered with activated charcoal .

Originally, Koskenkorva Viina was only sold in 0.5 liter glass bottles. Other bottle sizes have also been available in stores since the 1990s. In addition, there are now beside the traditional 38 percent Koskenkorva Viina other products such as a 32 percent "light" version or from rye burned Koskenkorva Viina Ruis . The Finlandia Vodka export brand is now owned by the American Brown Forman Corporation , but is still produced by Altia and only differs in the lack of added sugar.

Salmiakki Koskenkorva

Salmiakki Koskenkorva has been very popular in Finland since the early 1990s . It is a mixed drink made from Koskenkorva and Turkish pepper . At the beginning of 1993, Salmiakki Koskenkorva came onto the market as the (then only available) pre-filled mixture. The drink had the same alcohol content as Koskenkorva Viina , but was classified as a liqueur in a lower tax bracket and therefore cheaper. Almost two months later the Finnish state alcohol trade Alko had to take the product out of the range again at the instigation of the politicians concerned about the popularity of Salmiakki Koskenkorva among Finnish youth. In 1995 the distribution of Salmiakki Koskenkorva was resumed, but this time with a lower alcohol content and higher prices.
