Cosmetics of evil

Cosmetics of Evil ( Cosmétique de l'ennemi ) is a novel by the Belgian author Amélie Nothomb . It was first published in France on August 22, 2001 by Albin Michel, the German translation by Brigitte Große was published by Diogenes Verlag in March 2004, and the paperback followed in July 2005.

The author, who was awarded the “ Grand Prix du Roman ” by the Académie française in 1999, devotes herself to just one subject in this relatively short novel: the evil in people. In doing so, she deliberately refrains from any accessories, because the whole book consists only of a single dialogue between two people.

The content of the novel was adapted to various theater stages in French and German-speaking countries. Under the French original title Cosmétique de l'ennemi , performances took place in 2005 at the “Théâtre Le Public” in Brussels and at the “Théâtre de l'Ancre” in Charleroi . The first performance under the German title took place on January 10, 2006 in the "Theater an der Drachengasse" in Vienna , on January 13, 2006 the world premiere of the play took place under the direction of Matthias Heße at the Dortmund Theater.
