The Kosmos district is a DDR large housing estate in Berlin district Altglienicke in the district of Treptow-Koepenick . It was built from 1987 to 1991 and, according to the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, has a population of 5,665 (as of Dec. 2019).

history

The name is reflected in the street names, which have the names Venus, Uranus or Pegasus, for example. The area was built using prefabricated panels with three to eleven storeys. In the south, the Kosmosviertel borders the Brandenburg community of Schönefeld .

Today the quarter is struggling with a high proportion of unemployment and long-term unemployment as well as high levels of immigration and emigration. For this reason, there is a district management system with various measures for the Kosmosviertel. In 2019, the state of Berlin bought back 1,821 apartments from a private investor, which, due to the high purchase price, led to political disputes over the state's purchase policy. In the 1990s, the 17 buildings were forcibly privatized as a measure to reduce old GDR debts.
