Koven (building)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Koven or Koben (plural: Koeben, Koebens, Koems) is an old Low German name for a stable for pigs, sheep, harvest supplies or agricultural implements. They were also called Schünens or scrubbing, the latter term being closely related to barn .

The outdated expression is best known nowadays either as a place name suffix (-koven, e.g. Müllekoven , Oedekoven ) or in the special composition pork pork. Traditional pig pens did not necessarily have to mark an entire building, but could also stand for a wooden shed (southern German Kobel ) - free-standing or within an otherwise otherwise used agricultural building.
