history

The Krökentor was built after 1230 in the 13th century as a late medieval city gate. After 1460 the gate was rebuilt. The gate system was reinforced. A kennel was created . A gun turret was added to the outer enclosure wall. To the east of the gatehouse, another gun turret was built into the inner city wall. During the Thirty Years War a horn factory was built in front of the trench .

During the expansion of the city fortifications into a fortress in the 17th century, the Krökentor was also redesigned around 1700. The route of the passage through the fortifications was very complicated, also due to the need to bypass an old quarry. With the further expansion of the fortress, the passage was changed several times. The last redesign of the passage took place in 1868. Since March 1, 1863, the city council, in response to many complaints from citizens, demanded the improvement of the passage from the military authorities. The renovation was finished in 1868. The old quarry was bridged almost in a straight line onto Lüneburger Chaussee .

Due to the changed weapon technology, the fortress lost its importance significantly in the second half of the 19th century. The fortifications were gradually abandoned. In 1888 the Krökentor was demolished.
