The toad head dragons ( Phrynocephalus ) are a genus of agamas that occur from the Arabian Peninsula across Central Asia to Mongolia and northeast China. Almost all species live in dry areas. Phrynocephalus theobaldi lives in the Himalayas up to heights of 5000 meters and thus has the highest habitat of all reptiles.

The head of the toad head dragons is round and clearly separated from the flattened body. Your nostrils are small and often only crevices, the eardrum is scaly, the eyelids are also covered with scales and bulging. Most of the animals are brown or gray in color. The smallest species only reach a length of 5 cm, while the largest such as the bearded toad head ( Phrynocephalus mystaceus ) or the spotted toad head ( Phrynocephalus maculatus ) have a length of approx. 24 cm when fully grown, with the tail taking up half the length.
