Crutch tower
The Krückenturm (also Hundsturm ) was a defense tower in the outer city wall of Aachen . It no longer exists today.
General
The crutch tower was built 190 meters from the Ponttor , its direct neighbor within the city wall. It was separated from the Königstor by the Bongart Tower , Gregoriusturm , Beguinenturm , Burtscheider Tower and the Long Tower .
history
The exact year of construction of the tower has not been recorded, but it is named in a document from 1450.
The demolition of the tower took place in two steps. Due to a decision made in 1823, the demolition began, although this only affected the parts that extended beyond the city wall. In a second step in 1850, the entire building was removed along with a piece of the city wall several hundred meters in length.
architecture
The crutch tower was a semicircular tower and, with a width of 6.40 meters, was one of the small towers of the outer city wall. The building had only one floor and consisted of a single room, which was provided with three loopholes.
