Burtscheider Tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Burtscheider Tower was a defense tower of the outer city wall of the city of Aachen, which was built between 1300 and 1350 . It is no longer preserved.

location

In the outer ring of the wall , the Burtscheider Tower stood in the west-northwest between Königstor and Ponttor, about 50 meters northeast of the Long Tower between Turmstrasse and Junkerstrasse. Between the Burtscheider Tower and the Königstor there was no other tower apart from the Long Tower, between the Burtscheider Tower and the Ponttor still stood the Beguinenturm , the Gregoriusturm , the Bongartsturm and the Krückenturm .

history

The construction date of the Burtscheider Tower is not known, but, like the Long Tower, it will be set early in the 14th century, as this section of the wall in the north-west of the city was built as one of the first sections of the second wall ring because of the favorable terrain for an attack on the city .

Unlike the Burtscheider Tor , through which the road to Burtscheid led, the Burtscheider Tower had no geographical reference to this place, which is now a district of Aachen. Rather, the name of the tower indicates that the citizens of Burtscheid have secured the financing for the construction and maintenance of the building.

During the French occupation of Aachen , the tower was demolished in the course of the razing of the Aachen city fortifications in the first quarter of the 19th century.

description

The Burtscheider Tower had a semicircular floor plan with straight legs. It had only one projectile that protruded only a little over the top of the wall. The building was 10.40 meters wide and 8 meters deep. Of the three loopholes for bow and crossbowmen , two were arranged on the side of the trench, and a third was inclined towards the Long Tower.

The ground floor was vaulted with a semi-domed vault, which merged into a barrel vault over the extended legs. The roof consisted of half a cone roof and then turned into a gable roof .
