Wirichsbongardstor
The Wirichsbongardstor was a city gate of the outer city wall of the city of Aachen . Little is known about the building, which no longer exists today.
General
The Wirichsbongardstor was located in the southeast of Aachen in the area of today's Theaterstrasse . Only the Krichelenturm separated it from the Marschiertor in the city wall , while the shield tower , powder turret and red ball tower lay between it and the Adalbertstor . Its exact position could only be determined a few years ago through civil engineering work.
history
There is only a small amount of secure historical data available about the city gate. On the city view of Aachen by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg from 1576 it was called Wijngart Boghart poortz , on the Johannes Blaeuschen map from 1649 Wingartz Bongart poortz . Wingart (z) is early New High German for vineyard, Bongart for orchard, which is why the gate was also called Weinbergstor . Its year of construction is not known. It is known that it was closed in 1648. The Burtscheid bailiffs held the right to use the building . For years it served as a storage room for the lords of Frankenberg Castle . At the beginning of the 18th century, its purpose changed. It was converted into a windmill. The mill, which was owned by the city, but could also be partly leased by bakers, was supposed to be used in times of need to grind urgently needed flour. Documents from 1847 show that parts of the city gate still existed at that time. After that his track is lost. During excavation work for the construction of a new building, remnants of the wall were found that clearly show the exact position of the former building.
architecture
The Wirichsbongardstor was a four-story rectangular building with a width of 14 meters and a depth of 11.50 meters. Originally the upper part of the city gate was protruding and made of stone, with a high hipped roof. This changed when it was converted into a windmill. Here wood was used for the upper area. The mill had a front gate that can be found at almost all of Aachen's city gates. In the case of the Wirichbongardstore, it was a simple square building.
