Pont Middle Gate

The Pontviertel, copper engraving from 1566. A little above the center of the picture the tower of the Pontmittelor, the Ponttor at the top right.

The Pontmittelor was a city gate of the inner city wall of Aachen .

The gate system was formed by a square gate with a barbakan- like porch in order to be able to better defend the town, which is morphologically lower at this point . The Pontmitteltor had become largely useless after the establishment of the outer walls of Aachen for the defense of the city and was probably already partially laid down in the second half of the 18th century along with large parts of the inner city wall. The entire gate system was finally demolished during the French occupation between 1803 and 1807.

The Teutonic Order Commander St. Aegidius was built next to the Pontmittelor in the 14th century .
