Ursuline Gate
The Ursulinertor , also known as the Aldegundistor or Adalbertsmittelor , was one of the side gates in the inner city wall of Aachen , which is also called the inner ring , first wall or Barbarossa wall . This was built at the instigation of Emperor Friedrich I between 1171 and 1175 and ran roughly where the inner ring of the city of Aachen still runs today. The Ursuline Gate was built in the middle of the 13th century and is no longer preserved today.
history
When the Ursuline Gate was built, great importance was attached to the connection to the important Adalbert Stift.
location
The Ursulinertor was located in the east-southeast of Aachen in the so-called Barbarossa Wall between the Harduinstor and the Besterdertor . More precisely, it was about where today Ursulinerstrasse, Holzgraben, and Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz meet.
Others
In Ursulinerstraße, which at that time led to the Ursulinertor, there are still the remains of a large Roman square, which probably connected the two thermal baths in Roman times. Mighty masonry was found under house numbers 7 to 9. It is the rear wall of the arcades, which have been reconstructed at the courtyard. Possibly the Roman administrative center of the settlement was also located here - the so-called forum . This wall was preserved as it was integrated into the basement of a medieval building.
Ursulinerstraße, formerly also known as Aldegundisstraße, is the oldest street in Aachen known as Weg, although the Klüppel semi-detached house has an important history, including at the end of the 16th century as the central prayer house of the Reformed Church in Aachen.
