Powder turret
The powder tower was a watchtower on the outer city wall of Aachen . It no longer exists today.
The powder turret was between the watchtowers Rotkugelturm and the shield tower in the east-southeast of the city.
The tower was semicircular and had a width of 8.30 meters and a depth of 6.30 meters. The wall thickness of 1.80 meters is remarkable. It was possible to fire attackers from three loopholes on the first floor.
The powder tower was used as a storage room for powder, as was the long tower , which is therefore also called the powder tower. So the name indicates the intended use, but was not the original name of the tower. However, this has not been passed down.
In 1860 the tower was partially demolished. For some time, until its complete demolition in 1871, a dye works used it as a farm building.
