Shield tower
The shield tower , which is also the name Schullthoirn or Schull tower wore was a watch tower of the outer walls of the city of Aachen . It was built in the southeast of the city. The building no longer exists today.
location
The powder tower and the Wirichsbongard Gate were adjacent to the tower within the city wall . The building acquired its military importance because it was able to control the valley of Aachen, which spreads to the east. This corresponds to today's Lothringer-, Augusta- and Friedrichsstraße.
Surname
The name Schullthroin or Schullturm is derived from a tavern next to the building. This was called "Schull" and was regularly used by the guards working in the tower.
Building construction
The tower with its three meters thick walls and pointed roof was striking because of its thickness. It had a depth of about ten meters and a width of 14 meters. There was also a square building attached to the tower, which reinforced this impression. The second floor of this building had five hatches that could be used by the riflemen for defense. In addition, the citizens of Aachen built a four-meter-wide tower next to it, which contained a staircase to the upper floor in the form of a spiral staircase. Another access to the tower was made possible from the wall side.
