from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alois Groppenberger von Bergenstamm (born August 1, 1754 in Vienna ; † February 13, 1821 ibid) was an Austrian local historian.

Life

Alois Groppenberger was the son of the estate owner Johann Georg Groppenberger. He was active in the Lower Austrian registry from 1771, where he became secretary of the Lower Austrian knighthood in 1800. Since 1791 he has carried the predicate Edler von Bergenstamm.

Groppenberger collected numerous documents on the history of Vienna, of which he owned manuscripts, certificates, seals and books. Since he was commissioned to describe the cornerstones and milestones within the lines of Vienna in 1795 , he was encouraged to do further studies on the history of Vienna because of his rich collections. In addition to his own work, he also provided the historian Anton Geusau with documents for his works.

meaning

Groppenberger's topographical research on a wide variety of topics in Vienna's urban history is still valuable today. The development of this discipline is largely due to his efforts.

In 1898 Bergenstammgasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.
