Red ball tower
The Rotkugelturm was a tower of the 5400 meter long outer city wall of Aachen, built in the 13th and 14th centuries . The tower stood on today's Beeckstrasse was demolished in the middle of the 19th century, it had to give way to the construction of a gas factory in 1830.
The former defensive structure was located between the former city gate Adalbertstor, about 100 meters away, and the Wirichsbongardstor .
The Rotkugelturm had changing names in literature. So it was called "Rothkugelsthurm", "Ruekogelsthorne", "Rohkogelsthurm" or "Schouenthorn". It is likely that the Roytküygel family, who lived in Aachen in the 14th century, gave the building its name. The tower is rarely mentioned in the literature and was of little military importance.
