The first power plant in Jaworzno was built in 1898. At that time, two units supplied direct voltage with an output of 320 kW . In 1903 a new boiler house with two boilers was installed at the "Friedrich August" (now "Piłsudski") colliery within the building that would later be the power station, increasing the output to 800 kW. In 1921 the power plant was expanded to an output of 7,620 kW and in 1938 again to 39.12 MW.
In the years 1948–1952 a new boiler and two new turbines were installed, the system now had a total output of 110.3 MW. After the plant was modernized in 1959, the output increased to 157.9 MW.
The Jaworzno III power plant consists of six power plant blocks with a total installed capacity of 1345 MW. The chimney of this power plant is the highest in Poland with a height of 306 meters.
