The Kriel power plant is a coal-fired power plant owned by the South African state energy provider Eskom with an installed capacity of 3.0 GW in the Mpumalanga province . The power plant consists of six blocks of 500 MW each and was the most powerful power plant in South Africa when it went into operation (1979). The coal comes from a directly connected opencast mine and is automatically brought to the power plant by belt conveyors .
