The Tutuka power plant is a coal-fired power plant owned by the state-owned South African energy supplier Eskom with an installed capacity of 3,652 GW in the Mpumalanga province . The first power plant block with an output of 609 MW was put into operation in 1985, the last of the six blocks in 1990. The power plant is an essential hub in the 765 kV high-voltage network in South Africa. With just over 20 billion tons of CO 2 in 2009, the power plant is one of the world's largest emitters of carbon dioxide .
