The collar sharks (genus Chlamydoselachus , family Chlamydoselachidae) are a genus and at the same time a family of sharks . Because of their anatomy and morphology of the two still living are species than most ancient extant considered sharks. For this reason, they are also referred to as " living fossils ".

The generic name is made up of the ancient Greek words χλαμύς / chlamys "coat" and σέλαχος / selachos "cartilaginous fish".

features

The body is slender, eel-like, and has protruding folds on the abdomen. The head has six pairs of gill openings, the lower ends of the first gill extend over the entire throat. The snout is extremely short and looks like it has been cut off, with the mouth being greatly elongated and attached to the head at the end. The teeth in the upper and lower jaw are uniform, with three strong crowns and a pair of intermediate crowns. The anal fin is larger than the sole dorsal fin and the caudal fin lacks a subterminal notch. Collared sharks reach a length of almost two meters. Males are sexually mature with a length of almost one meter.

Way of life

So far, relatively little is known about the way of life of the collar sharks. They have been caught at depths of 120 to nearly 1,500 meters and appear to live primarily on sandy bottoms.

Systematics

Distribution areas of Chlamydoselachus anguineus
Distribution area of Chlamydoselachus africanus

The collar sharks, together with the comb- toothed sharks (Hexanchidae), form the order Hexanchiformes , which is considered to be the most primitive group of sharks. Within the collar sharks only two recent species are distinguished:
