history

Main altar of the Kraljeva Sutjeska monastery

The place Kraljeva Sutjeska is located in the Trstionica valley. The Franciscan monastery is on the outskirts and lies at the foot of Mount Teševo . The monastery has been the spiritual and cultural center of this area for 650 years.

founding

The original monastery was probably built in the first half of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in a pamphlet by Bartol Pizanski who was a Franciscan writer. This script dates from 1385. After the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia, the monastery was mentioned in a Turkish script from 1469. It was destroyed during the persecution in 1524.

Renovation and construction

It took a long time before the Franciscans received planning permission to build the new monastery. The Ottomans had banned the use of the resistant materials, which is why the monastery was in constant danger of fire. Over time the newly built monastery perished. A repair permit was very difficult to enforce. After the Franciscans began the renovation without authorization, they were arrested. Due to these events, the Franciscans painted the new buildings with soot.

Ottoman conquest of Bosnia

In 1658 the monastery burned down with all the valuable archives and books in the library. The new monastery was rebuilt in 1664. During the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia at the end of the 17th century, the Franciscans had to leave the monastery and live in village huts. When the political uprisings had calmed down, they were able to return in 1704.

Construction work

During the 19th century the monastery was built twice, and the current monastery was built between 1888 and 1890. The building contractor Ivan Holz carried out the construction work. The monastery was consecrated on May 20, 1892, although construction continued until 1897. In the new monastery, water pipes and electrical lighting were introduced in 1914. It got its electricity from its own hydroelectric power station on the Trstionica River , which the communist government of Yugoslavia expropriated after the Second World War.

present

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the study of philosophy and theology was organized in the monastery for some of the Franciscans . Later the Franciscan novitiate was set up there and it stayed there until 1973. The monastery building was extensively renovated between 1982 and 1988. The monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska is rich in cultural-historical and artificial content: numerous archives with documents, valuable and old books, picture collections, metal and textile objects from the arts and crafts.
