Crane hook

A crane hook is used to grab and move a load . The hook as a curved component sits at the outer end of the rope of a crane or a goods elevator .

In the crane hook the load with a sling suspended. The link of a chain , the loop of a wire rope or, as a textile sling , a simple rope , a lifting strap or a round sling made of synthetic fibers are used as slings.

Crane hooks are often provided with a safety lock (hook safety catch as a snap lock or with a safety nut for screwing) in order to prevent the unintentional release of the load.

A distinction is made between crane hooks and a. after single hook, double hook, swivel hook. The swivel hook should enable turning under load.

Another classification is called standard hooks, safety load hooks, container or wide mouth hooks, coil or pipe hooks for lifting rolls and the like. Ä., round sling hook, shortening hook.

Loads may never be carried over people with unsecured crane hooks (e.g. crane hooks without hook safety device).

A crane hook that opens automatically when the load hits the ground was described by the Renaissance artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci in his Codex Madrid in the 1490s .
