The hospital chapel in Olesno ( Rosenberg OS ) is a listed sacred building. It once served as the chapel of the city's now demolished hospital.

history

After a Chapel of St. Anne and Mary was built in the east wing of the hospital in 1869, the construction of the larger neo-Gothic chapel began in 1909 and was completed in 1910. Initially, access to this chapel, consecrated to Mary, was only possible through the hospital itself. Later access from the street was also created. In addition to the hospital inmates, she was also frequently visited by local believers. A connection to the hospital existed on the ground floor level, and on the first floor there was a gallery from which the sick from the upper floor could attend the services.

The chapel remained inaccessible to the public for a long time after the Second World War . When the traces of war were removed in 1958, the chapel was given a lighter paint job and the elaborate ceiling painting was restored.

After the nuns who had previously served in the hospital left the city in 1995, services were only held sporadically. With the construction of a new hospital in 1997, the building began to decline and was sold in 2006. Plans to convert it into a hospice or old people's home failed and in 2011 the entire building had largely become a roofless ruin.

Despite strong efforts in 2009 to demolish the chapel, this, but not the entire building, was placed under monument protection. The entire building - apart from the remains of the facade - was demolished in favor of a supermarket.

The chapel was preserved and was structurally separated from the new building. During the construction work, the chapel was destroyed, especially the glass windows. Thereupon remaining windows and valuables were removed. Today a private initiative is taking care of the preservation and renovation of the chapel. In addition to the restored furnishings , it contains an exhibition on the history of the building and other churches in the area.

Construction and equipment

The flat-roofed, rectangular neo-Gothic hall building has a small apse . A figure of Saint Anne with her daughter was attached to the outer facade, which comes from the altar of the old hospital chapel.

The chapel has a high altar with a baby Jesus and two side altars. One of them is dedicated to Saint Francis , the patron saint of the community of sisters working in the hospital. The main altar contains relics of Saints Gaudentius and Januosius . A number of angels are striking about the furnishings . The chapel has several stained glass windows .

The ceiling painting of the flat-roofed chapel shows, in addition to ornaments, images of four local churches ( St. Anna , St. Rochus , St. Michael and Corpus Christi Church). There are further symbolic representations on the side walls.
