history

In 1374, the Clan Wallace owned the Auchincruive estate of the Cathcarts. A tower house of unknown year of construction was first mentioned at this location in 1532. James Murray , who had acquired Auchincruive in 1758, sold the property to the merchant Richard Oswald . This commissioned Robert Adam with the planning of the mansion Oswald Hall , which was probably built on the site of the Tower House. It was completed in 1767. The village developed with the manorial lands and coal mining. Oswald Hall has been owned by the Scottish Agricultural College or its predecessor organizations since 1927 . In the 1950s, five coal mines were still in operation in the area.
