Krateros (Macedonia)
Krateros was the favorite of Archelaos I and briefly ruled Macedonia . Nothing is known about his family situation. Diodorus reports that Krateros accidentally killed Archelaus during a hunt. Aristotle, on the other hand, reports that Archelaus had promised him one of his two daughters as a wife. However, he married the eldest daughter to Sirras , the king of Elimeia , in the course of a peace treaty and the younger to his son Amyntas. This breach of word caused Krateros to kill Archelaus. Another version, also handed down by Aristotle, reports that Krateros committed the murder of the king out of revenge with the participation of two accomplices named Dekamnichos and Hellenocrates from Larissa, because he had sexually abused him.
At the latest after a few months or even only days of government, Krateros was ousted from the throne by Orestes , with recent research generally denying a takeover by Krateros, such as RM Errington .
