The wayside shrine in Holzhausen

The crucifixion shrine from 1608 is a torture in the Dittelbrunn district of Holzhausen in Lower Franconia. It was built as a so-called monolith shrine in the course of the Counter Reformation .

history

The so-called monolithic wayside shrines shaped the region around Schweinfurt during the Counter Reformation . The Würzburg prince-bishops promoted the erection of these religious monuments throughout the diocese. The reason for this was, among other things, the spread of Lutheran teaching and the turning away from the old faith by the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. The wayside shrine is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

The Holzhausen wayside shrine was created under the rule of Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn in 1608. The bishop particularly promoted the Counter Reformation in his diocese . The founders of the torture are unknown because no inscription has survived. In the 1980s the wayside shrine was extensively renovated. The floor is located near the road to Maibach and was probably built as a Wegmarter.

description

The monolithic wayside shrines all have a similar appearance. The rectangular, massive columns merge into a block-like headboard. Each was made from a single stone. The base has a square base, which is often heavily bevelled in the upper area. Most of the sticks are decorated with coats of arms . In a large majority the depictions of crucifixion scenes predominate in the essay.

The Holzhausen wayside shrine is 2.46 m high. The front of the stick was decorated with a relief of the crucifixion . The coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn was placed below the crucified Christ and two assistants. Unlike many other monolith sticks, the back is empty. St. Andrew was placed on the left and a bishop, presumably St. Kilian , is shown on the right .
