The Kreuzkirche is a neo-Gothic Protestant church in the Wieblingen district of Heidelberg , which was built between 1904 and 1906. It is a listed building.

history

From the old parish church Wieblingen in the park of the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule only the choir, sacristy and tower have been preserved. The church from the 15th century initially served as a simultaneous church since the Reformation, later exclusively as a Protestant parish church. In the 19th century the number of parishioners grew rapidly; Since the old parish church did not seem suitable for an extension, plans for a new building were made in the 1840s. In 1844 Baron von La Roche-Starkenfels, the owner of Wieblingen Castle and the Castle Park, offered a plot of land in the north of the park in exchange for the old church square. Due to disputes between the political community that owned the church tower and the church authorities, it took 60 years before a new building was planned.

The plans for the construction came from the grand ducal Baden's senior building director Hermann Behaghel , who had designed numerous historicist church buildings in Baden. In Heidelberg, in addition to the Kreuzkirche, these are the Johanneskirche in Neuenheim , the Christuskirche in Weststadt and the Friedenskirche in Handschuhsheim .

description

The cruciform church follows the type of the Protestant preaching church with a cruciform floor plan. Three cross arms take up galleries for the community, with the fourth cross arm Behaghel did not follow the Wiesbaden program for Protestant church building, which provides for an organ gallery, but designed a polygonal choir with three windows. The windows designed by Rudolf Yelin show the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Instead of a vault, the church interior is closed at the top by an open, artistically decorated roof structure made of wood. The original colored version of the interior with tendrils was restored during the renovation in 1992/93.
