The Kreuzkirche Kirchdorf in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg is a church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Kirchdorf.

history

The Kreuzkirche was founded as an offshoot of the Ochsenwerder parish and consecrated in 1388. In 1389 the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Verden . This makes it the oldest church on the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg; until 1895 it was the only church there. Its current form and furnishings come mainly from the 17th century, more precisely from the years 1614 to 1617, when the dilapidated church was rebuilt.

In 1893/94 the cruciform church was rebuilt and the cross plan was created. The church suffered bomb damage during World War II , which was removed in 1955. The altar of the destroyed Trinity Church in Harburg was built into the Kreuzkirche. During the Great Flood in 1962 , the church was a refuge for the Wilhelmsburg population. In 1976/77 the church was restored and a burial chamber was uncovered.

The parish of Kirchdorf was created in 2002 through the merger of the two parishes of the Kreuzkirche and St. Raphael.

Architecture and equipment

The Kreuzkirche has a brick facade and a cross plan. It has a number of historical furnishings, including the stalls with the pictures of the prophets, the prince's chair, the Furtwängler organ from 1870 and the font from 1655.
