Kreuzstadl Rechnitz
The Kreuzstadl Rechnitz stands on the southern outskirts in the market town of Rechnitz in the Oberwart district in Burgenland . The former agricultural building serves as a memorial to the Rechnitz massacre . The building is a listed building .
history
In the Kreuzstadl, around 180 Hungarian Jews were murdered in the Rechnitz massacre on the night of March 24-25, 1945 . The shooting was carried out by the local Gestapo leader Franz Podezin and other helpers. Despite frequent search excavations, the graves of the victims could not be found until today. In 1993 the Kreuzstadl was bought by the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien in order to be preserved as a warning to posterity.
