Jewish cemetery ObjectID: 8709 |
Herrengasse KG location : Rechnitz |
A letter of protection, which allowed the Rechnitz Jews to bury their dead in an enclosed cemetery, was the reason that a separate Jewish cemetery was established in 1682. Until the 19th century, the cemetery, which was surrounded by a stone wall from 1827, was enlarged through land purchases, so that the cemetery area now covers 8,215 m².
The cemetery was desecrated as early as the first half of the 18th century, but it was not until the Nazi era that it was seriously damaged. In 1988 the cemetery was restored to its original purpose by the Kultusgemeinde Graz. In November 1990 the cemetery was desecrated again, and the cemetery has not been open to the public since then. |

On the southern outskirts of Rechnitz lies the so-called Kreuzstadl because of its cross-shaped ground plan.
This is where around 180 Hungarian Jews were murdered in the Rechnitz massacre on the night of March 24th to 25th, 1945. The shooting was carried out by the local Gestapo leader Franz Podezin and some helpers. Despite frequent search excavations, the graves of the victims could not be found until today. Castle ruins, Hausberg, Ödes Castle ObjectID: 8445 |
Location KG: Rechnitz |
The ruins of Ödes Castle are located on a prominent protrusion above the bathing lake Rechnitz in Faludital, and can be reached via a marked footpath or a forest road. The complex consisted of a mighty high structure, which was surrounded by a ring ditch and a ring wall as well as a kind of outer bailey and was only accessible from the northwest. Today all of this has fallen into disrepair and covered with high forest. The "Barren Castle" has historical evidence that it had to be surrendered in the year 1289 after a long siege as part of the " Güssing feud " of Count Ivan against Duke Albrecht I of Austria and Styria. After the peace agreement with the Hungarian King Andreas III. the complex was partially destroyed by order of Duke Albrecht I. In the 15th century it was taken by Emperor Friedrich III. , for the siege and conquest by King Matthias Corvinus and for sale. The castle subsequently lost its importance, as the castle was expanded in the village. In the second half of the 19th century, the county administration ordered the destruction of the "Barren Castle" in order to "eliminate the possibility of hiding places for thieves". |
