The Great Hirschstein ( Hungarian : Nagy Szarvaskő ) is 862 meters above sea level after Geschriebenstein the second highest mountain of Burgenland , the easternmost federal state of Austria . It is part of the Günser Mountains and the highest mountain in the whole of Burgenland ( Oberwart district ). The Kleine Hirschenstein ( 836  m above sea level ) is a good kilometer to the northwest .

Naming

The Großer Hirschenstein - or Hirschenstein for short - owes its name to a legend. On the occasion of a visit to Schlaining Castle , King Matthias Corvinus went hunting and killed a stag with his spear, which collapsed on a stone while dying.

flora

In the area of the Großer Hirschenstein there was a large occurrence of spring knot flowers until about 40 years ago , which however almost fell victim to human recklessness and ignorance. The nature park association Geschrittenstein-Írottkő was able to save the stock and contribute to its recovery through targeted maintenance and the creation of a spring knot flower biotope .

Infrastructure

The Hirschenstein transmitter built on the Großer Hirschenstein with a total height of 90 meters (17.5 meters building height plus 72.5 meters mast height) supplies the central and southern Burgenland with the ORF programs as well as a private radio and TV transmitter.

One of the ZAMG weather stations was also there until mid-September 2014 . The station was dismantled because of the high costs.

In 2012 a new nursing home was opened in the center of Rechnitz and the one on Hirschenstein was closed, the building has been empty since then. The Vamed as Mitbetreiberin needs by the end of 2015 [date] presented to the Province of Burgenland, a re-use concept.
