Way of the Cross to Wies (Freising)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kreuzweg zur Wies is a way of the cross in the north of Freising (Upper Bavaria). It leads from the northern outskirts ( start of the Way of the Cross coordinates: 48 ° 24 ′ 47 ″  N , 11 ° 44 ′ 33.8 ″  E ) through the Wieswald, past the forest cemetery to the Wieskirche .

The Way of the Cross was laid out in 1860 by the Freising pastor Simon Plank. He donated the complex after the pilgrimage to the Wieskirche had been revived in the mid- 1840s .

The Way of the Cross consists of 14 masonry and plastered wayside shrines . They depict the 14 stations of Jesus Christ's passion on the day of his death. Brief descriptions of the events and prayer texts are found under the motifs, which are executed as reliefs.

In 1999 the entire system was renewed by the church painter Bernd Flassak .
